The production company is usually hired by the client and they would then discuss terms of their contract before actually agreeing to the terms. One the contracted has been signed you are then legally forced to oblige. An example of this would be when an actor and production company set up a contract on what they have agreed. The actor is then obliged legally into doing what has been agreed this can be from doing something in a movie or for instance how many movies they are going to film in.
